hump-day download: I was only trying to

from None of These Songs are About You or Anyone You Know by Lonesome Ghost

High school and “the Golden Rule.”
I played the games, and I played the fool.
Then, I got caught looking at what I can’t have,
and wasted so much time just to make you laugh…

Where have all my good thoughts gone?
Have I chased them away or have they moved along?
Yeah, well, I never got the chance to say:
I love it when you wear your hair that way.

But, when the winter’s winds have died,
and all the leaves go green on the trees again,
you’ll find that I was only trying to catch you
like the falling star
you are, to me.

Set me free from this net I’m in.
Yeah, cut the ties and let me swim.
I got caught looking at what I can’t have
And not a day goes by where I don’t look back
and say…

When the winter’s winds have died,
and all the leaves go green on the trees again,
you’ll find that I was only trying to catch you
like the falling star
you are, to me.

Hump-Day Download: The Funky President Mixtape by KRAZ

KRAZ presents his 1st mixtape “The Funky President” Kraz (from Soulive/Royal Family) mixes and remixes everything from James Brown (title track) and rare soul cuts to Jay Z and The Black Keys while throwing in exclusive original tracks from Fyre Dept and Lettuce to create an ultra funky soundtrack.” – from the Royal Family’s bandcamp

I am completely obsessed with this for everything from spring cleaning, the gym, figure drawing class, and partying down… not to mention the subtlety of a wah-pedal sexy-effect. I highly recommend downloading the whole thing (FOR FREE!) and listening to it straight through.. the progression of the 23 tracks is just PERFECT.

personal favorites: “Afro Sheen” – Neal Evans, “Nobody’s Baby” – Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, “Ride” – Q-Tip, “The Love You Left Behind” – Syl Johnson, “Knockin'” – Ledisi prod. by Fyre Dept., “Everlasting Light” – The Black Keys, “Pass the Mic” – The Beastie Boys, “Flashing Lights” – Kanye West feat. Dwele, “Fever” – Fyre Dept. (really sweet).
but seriously listen to it from beginning to end. maybe skip “empire state of mind” (I’m sorry, am I the only person who hates this song? almost ruined the whole mixtape for me..)

Hump-Day Download: Tricil my LOVE!

So when I first met this kid, he was shredding on the guitar and got distracted by a pretty photographer taking his picture. He missed a note, made a priceless face, and we’ve been friends ever since. It was, then, a blessing in disguise when he stepped away from the rock band he was in to pursue more of his electronic endeavors, namely producing stellar dubstep and hardish electronica under the guise of his TRICIL moniker.

Well-versed in Ableton Live, all things Social-Media, a master of Production, and simply put, a really fucking nice guy, Johnny has quickly climbed to the top of my list of people I would be happy to be stranded on a desert island with. Not only does he have great taste, but his rare breed of mash-mix-dub-dareisayD’n’B has just the right amount of dinge and grit for me, while still being ridiculously danceable and gloriously produced.

First, you’ll want to watch this G O R G E O U S video by Burning Head set to TRICIL’s “The Emancipation”

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Then, check out some of these “Emancipation” remixes from some familiar names in the Atlanta Soundcloud Group:

Then, check out some of these kicking tracks and download some for yourself.

Here’s a new track, Jungol – Two People (Remix By TRICIL)

Hump-Day download: The Civil Wars

My friend Mia assumes that because I’m a music snob I know everything about good music all the time. Although she is mostly correct, she turned me on to this rad band I had never heard of, The Civil Wars.

I’m usually not crazy about singer-songwriter duos.. but these guys defy my assumptions of the cheesy romantic-ballady style of most couply duos.. they aren’t together romantically, yet are able to maintain such harmonic chemistry.. it’s nice that they each are married to other people and still have such a dynamic. They remind me a little of a more saccharine Bowerbirds.. The free download is from a show at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, GA (<3) and unfortunately doesn’t include my favorite song.. but the video (which is GORGEOUS) is below for your listening pleasure.

They have some southern dates coming up for all you in Georgia, SC and NC..  but are unfortunately playing in Boston the night of my Anniversary Luau.. so I won’t be going. : (

Hump-Day Download – Floating Action !

Black Mountain-based musician, producer, and songwriter Seth Kauffman plays with a literal dream-team of musicians live to replicate the impeccably arranged recordings he creates track by track himself. A composer of sorts, Kauffman is also a complete rock star, and continues to compound his balance of analog treasure.

Download these two songs, the single: Dead Reckoning from May, and Eye of the Needle, from the new release, Desert Etiquette.

or Download Eye of the Needle HERE

After Seth Kauffman’s 2006 debut and 2007 follow-up left critics drawing comparisons as diverse as Motown to the Carribean, Kauffman returns as Floating Action. This April, Park The Van Records will release Floating Action’s self-titled debut, and Kauffman’s most accomplished work to date. Once again Kauffman has performed and recorded virtually every note himself at his home studio, and – in an age where obsessive computer editing and auto-tuning are taking the humanity out of even most home recordings – once again his refreshingly organic approach to making music is receiving rave reviews: “He invokes those classic, soul staples of deep and penetrating bass lines, simple but ideal and perfect lyrics about the troubles of love and jingling guitars. He gives you the jitters and the absolute sway is all his.” (Daytrotter).
